Workers in occupations requiring prolonged forward head posture (e.g., surgeons, assembly line workers) face high neck muscle and spinal load, leading to elevated neck disease rates. However, there is a lack of ergonomic solutions that provide effective support without interfering with operations.
Tianjin University's research team designed an innovative variable-stiffness neck support exoskeleton using pneumatic stretch actuators. It allows free head movement with minimal resistance in flexible mode and provides stable support to reduce muscle burden in rigid mode.
During validation, the team used CHINGMU's system with 4 high-speed cameras to record head movements at 110Hz, comprehensively evaluating the exoskeleton's impact on cervical range of motion and support performance. This research has been published at IROS 2025, a top robotics conference.
