University‑Enterprise‑Built Motion‑Capture Industry‑Academia Exploration Laboratory Settles in Wuhan / Company Updates

Driven by technological innovation, animation has evolved from 2D to 3D production, from hand‑drawing to computer‑aided workflows, and from low frame‑rate rendering to 24fps or even 48fps. Today’s pipelines deliver highly‑detailed character performances and spectacular action sequences. Nevertheless, animation production remains a complex process. Traditional 2‑D software alone struggles to render sophisticated visual effects in real‑world projects. Motion‑capture technology has greatly eased such production challenges.

A Chinese self‑developed motion‑capture manufacturer has partnered with universities in Wuhan to launch this joint‑built motion‑capture laboratory. Serving as a new talent‑development incubator, it will cultivate professionals for local film, game, animation and creative‑design industries. Covering an area of 280 square meters, the lab is equipped with 32 infrared optical motion‑capture cameras and supports full‑body tracking for no fewer than five performers simultaneously.

  • Intelligent data repair: stable full‑body tracking during challenging movements including hugging, push‑ups and rolling (demonstration video available upon request)

  • One‑click human‑skeleton generation

  • Active marker tracking: simultaneous recognition of multiple rigid‑body targets with identical active markers

  • Real‑time tracking‑quality indicator for visual monitoring

  • On‑the‑fly adjustment of rigid‑body coordinate system and origin, with real‑time updates visible in Unity 3D and UE4

  • Real‑time data streaming to animation and game engines: MotionBuilder, Unity 3D, UE4

  • Real‑time data export to research‑oriented software: ROS, Matlab, Visual3D

  • Automatic data filling in rigid‑body, skeleton, motion or cycle modes

  • Post‑processing editing tools: data repair, gap‑filling, key‑frame shifting, linear smoothing, quadratic‑fitting smoothing, spline smoothing

  • Export formats: C3D, FBX, BVH, CMR; seamless compatibility with Maya, 3ds Max, MotionBuilder, Unity 3D, UE4, iClone

  • Synchronized operation with facial‑capture and virtual‑shooting systems inside MotionBuilder, Unity and UE4 environments
