Hollywood‑Grade Motion Capture Within Reach: ActorCore Sets the Stage for Large‑Scale Protest Productions.
Orlando‑based animation studio Monkey Chow has launched Riot, released on leading online 3D‑content store ActorCore. A highly anticipated theme, Riot is a motion pack for dramatic and action‑packed scenes, where crowds express outrage, engage in misconduct and fierce confrontations.
Riot is a dynamic motion‑capture pack featuring 61 turbulent sequences, embodying the spirit of Selma, Born on the Fourth of July, The Hunger Games, and recent global emergencies marked by widespread social and political unrest. Depictions of public protests and clashes with authorities ramp up tension, ranging from peaceful marches with placards to confrontations against law‑enforcement officers in riot gear.
The riot motions cover a spectrum of behaviours including holding banners, police presence, and physical conflicts such as shoving and throwing debris. Compared with live‑action shooting with crowds of extras on‑set, this diverse set of motions enables groups of characters to effectively convey anger, delivering speed and convenience while minimising production time and costs.
In motion capture, it is critical for cameras to capture as many markers on performers’ suits as possible. Therefore, the production team had to build custom‑made props for motion capture to reduce occlusion. For instance, a stand‑in shield was built to replicate police shields, retaining only contact points required by performers. This placed emphasis on performers’ imagination, as rendered objects might appear larger than their onstage counterparts.

“Riot needed to cover everything from peaceful protests to full‑scale street battles between demonstrators and police. We assembled an experienced team of stunt professionals who helped us create many fight sequences,” said Jeff Sheetz of Monkey Chow.

Choose from over 400 fully rigged, animatable 3D characters available in the ActorCore asset store to build large crowds as background extras. Alternatively, users can easily “clone” animated bystanders within iClone to form mobs of angry citizens marching, waving and shouting.
This pack is ideal for creating seamless crowd scenes, as all walking motions are loopable. When integ

rated with iClone 8 crowd simulation, users can effortlessly spawn characters with varied protester animations and quickly assemble large‑scale public‑demonstration scenes. Blended motions such as those from Run for Your Life generate chaotic moments, facilitating fast creation of dramatic riot scenes for games and films.

The Riot motion pack contains a wide range of intense interactions, including throwing, shoving, fighting, arrests, and crowd dispersal with police shields. Each of these motions requires skillful object handling or human‑to‑human interaction, and iClone is user‑friendly software for easy animation editing and refinement. For enthusiasts, Reallusion offers free motion‑capture editing courses to help users master the creation of realistic interactions.

Users have the flexibility to use the 61 motions independently, or seamlessly blend them with other motions via iClone’s advanced motion‑editing functions. All motions come with a 100% royalty‑free license and can be exported in FBX or BVH formats for integration into real‑time game engines including Unity, Unreal, CryEngine and Game Maker.
