Hideo Kojima Unveils the Trailer for OD, Featuring Integrated Motion Capture Applications / Industry News

2023/12/13

If you are a gamer, you may have watched The Game Awards last night. This annual gala presents a lineup of awards honoring game developers, alongside world premieres of numerous games set to launch in the coming years.

While Baldur’s Gate 3 took home the well-deserved Game of the Year award, arguably the most significant moment of the show came when Hideo Kojima took the stage to reveal the trailer for his long-anticipated game, OD. Alongside the trailer showcase, he announced that he would collaborate on the project with horror writer and director Jordan Peele (creator of Get Out, Us, and Nope).

We still know relatively little about exactly what OD is, but we do know Kojima aims to blend video games, film and technology into a new form of gaming experience designed to be more immersive than anything created so far. Jordan Peele brings the creative narrative vision, while Xbox and its cloud infrastructure handle the technical side of this puzzle.

The trailer features three actors set to appear in the game reciting a random phrase — similar to the popular pangram “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.” Toward the end of the trailer, a door opens within one actor’s eyes, and they scream at whatever steps through the doorway.

One detail you might have overlooked: the actors you see in the trailer are not captured as raw live footage. The people portrayed are real, but what you actually view is newly developed animation technology in action. This technology will make AAA-quality character animation accessible to more creators, including indie developers and even hobbyists. Furthermore, it can sync with motion capture systems to deliver full-body motion capture.

Additionally, it works with any professional vertical stereo HMC capture solution to produce higher-fidelity results. If you already own a body motion capture system, the animation technology’s timecode support ensures facial performance animation can easily align with body motion capture and audio to deliver complete character performances. It can even generate convincing tongue animation driven purely by audio.

There is currently no confirmed release date for OD, nor do we know when a full trailer or deeper details about the game will arrive. Even so, it is thrilling to see the title leverage some of the biggest breakthroughs in animation.

Whatever this game turns out to be, it will undoubtedly be bizarre and groundbreaking.
