Exploring Motion Capture / Knowledge sharing

2023/11/23

Motion capture, also known as MoCap, is the process of recording real-life movements and using such recordings to animate characters within virtual environments. While Performance Capture is very similar to MoCap, there is a distinction: MoCap records head and body movement, whereas Performance Capture captures movement of the head, body, face and fingers.

MoCap is applied across many industries, yet it is most widely used in entertainment and gaming. The gaming industry leverages MoCap to produce cutscenes and character animations, while the entertainment industry relies on MoCap for lengthy character sequences, such as Caesar in Planet of the Apes or Alita in Alita: Battle Angel. Two of the most famous characters created with MoCap are Thanos in Avengers: Endgame and Kratos in God of War.

How Does Motion Capture Work?

MoCap is implemented with cameras and specialized motion capture suits. Since the primary goal is to record real movements rather than the actor themselves, these cameras are specially built to capture light reflections. That is why actors being recorded wear special motion capture suits fitted with reflective markers. These markers are arranged in a skeletal pattern; some are even placed on the actor’s face and fingers to capture full performances. For example, as the actor moves, the cameras use reflections from the markers to generate a digital skeleton and log all of the skeleton’s movements. In most cases, actors spend several days performing and recording a wide range of motions for their characters, continuing until all required movements are captured. Once the actor finishes recording, animators and digital artists use these recordings to build 2D or 3D characters.

Advantages and Disadvantages of MoCap

One major advantage of MoCap is that it enables animators to build characters with hyper-realistic movements. Another benefit is that it is less time-consuming and more cost-effective than manual keyframing or hand animation. For instance, it would be far more difficult and time-intensive for animators to manually draw every single movement of Thanos in Avengers: Endgame, where Thanos has more than 30 minutes of screen time. An additional advantage is that MoCap allows animators and artists to gather a large library of movements in a short period and boost productivity by granting sufficient time to refine 2D or 3D characters.

Conclusion

As demand for motion capture technology keeps rising across various industries, especially film and gaming, the quality of MoCap technology continues to evolve. Today, most modern films feature animated characters portrayed by real-life actors who depend on motion capture to bring their roles to life. Likewise, modern video games place heavy emphasis on character animation, which can be efficiently achieved with MoCap technology.
